Turning to the Basics is a one man wood shop bringing you hand crafted, one of a kind woodenware crafted in Canterbury, New Hampshire.

History of Turning to the Basics

I have been woodturning since 2019, when I primarily turned bowls. Over the years I expanded my skills and currently turn a large variety of items from rolling pins to lamps and holiday ornaments to artistic boxes. Every item from my shop is a one of a kind piece. the only constant is my passion for crafing high quality, beautiful, unique wood turned items.

Ash Fruit Bowl- $100

Crafted from two branches join together in a y, this bowl has a one of a kind grain pattern. This beautiful ash bowl was turned from a tree felled by emerald ash borers and took over 8 hours to craft over the course of a year.

The Bowl was turned to a rough shape while the wood was still green (wet). After a year, when the bowl was dry, it was turned to its final form, sanded, and finished with my homemade beeswax compound for a protective, food-safe, renewable finish.

The bowl is 11.75" diameter and 2" tall.

Oyster Shell Bowl -$60

This is one of a kind bowl is crafted from a maple tree and features a crushed oyster shell inlay. The Oyster shells where from a farm in NH!

The Bowl itself was turned to a rough shape while the wood was still green (wet). When the bowl was dry, it was turned to its final form, the grove was cut for the inlay and the crushed oyster shells were sacured in place by CA glue. the bowl was then sanded, and finished with my homemade beeswax compound for a protective, food-safe, renewable finish.

Large Maple Platter -$160

This platter was crafted from the intersection two large branches, creating truly unique grain patterns in the wood. The natural cracks formed in the woods as it dried are filled stabilied with soapstone inlay, highlighting the story of the wood. This platter is 15" in diameter, 1.5" tall and took 10 hours to craft over a year.

The platter was turned to a rough shape while the wood was still green (wet). After a year, when the platter was dry, it was turned to its final form, sanded, and finished with my homemade beeswax compound for a protective, food-safe, renewable finish.

Maple Soapstone Bowl- $90

This bowl is crafted from locally felled sugar maple and includes a soapstone inlay from a former Shaker sink. The bowl features a knot from a branch creating a beautiful grain pattern throughout the bowl.

This bowl is 7.5" diameter 2.25" tall.

The Bowl was first turned to a rough shape while the wood was still gren (wet). After a year, when the bowl was dry, it was turned to its final form, sanded, and finished with my homemade beeswax compound for a protective, food-safe, renewable finish.
